Meet Jayla: Ninety-Nines Scholarship Recipient & Future Pilot

News > Meet Jayla: Ninety-Nines Scholarship Recipient & Future Pilot
Jayla Johnson

Gleim Aviation is excited to introduce Jayla Johnson, a high school senior and recent recipient of the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship, presented by the Kentucky Bluegrass Chapter of The Ninety-Nines, Inc.

So how did we meet this aspiring young aviator from Louisville, Kentucky? Jayla reached out to Gleim Aviation to purchase training materials for the Private Pilot FAA knowledge test. You see, Jayla won one of the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship Fly Now student pilot awards, which are growing more intensely competitive each year. This opportunity provides funding in the form of reimbursement after milestones are achieved – so Jayla still had to initially purchase her training materials on her own dime.

After we learned about her aspirations, we contacted Jayla to talk about her plans to become a pilot. Gleim sent Jayla the Deluxe Private Pilot Kit with Audio Review to help her study for the knowledge test and prepare her for flight training and the practical test as well. Her journey to become a pilot is an inspiration for young student pilots everywhere. We checked in with Jayla for a review of her training so far:

My name is Jayla Johnson, and I am a student pilot. I am so grateful that Gleim was able to help support my Private Pilot training with the kit. Honestly, I could not have received a better kit. It may seem overwhelming at first with all the different components you find, but Gleim provides a wonderful syllabus that walks you through the process, step-by-step. The kit comes with all the books and tools you will need in order to study for and pass the FAA written exam.

Online codes were also provided with the kit, allowing me to access the Online Ground School courses and the Online Test Prep to make sure I am retaining the information and learning to be a safer pilot all around. The kit also came with a logbook and handy training record to document my journey. Most importantly, it came with a flight bag that can carry all of my books!

I am only in the beginning stages of Private Pilot training, so I am still getting acclimated with all of the materials. So far I have mostly been using the Gleim Private Pilot FAA Knowledge Test Prep book in order to study for my written exam. I go through each chapter, highlight along the way, and then check my understanding with the questions provided at the end.

I’ll admit it’s not all smooth sailing. Being a high school senior and preparing to apply to colleges, it seems like I don’t have any time to study. It can also get super tiring staring at the book for what feels like forever, and that’s why I absolutely love the online feature! Whether I have a 20-minute break at my job or riding in the car, I always have access to Gleim!

I highly suggest setting timers for yourself, so that you’re not just going through the motions with each chapter but truly understanding it. Read a chapter all the way through and then stretch. Get a drink of water, take a break, and mull over the information you just read. Then when you are ready to return, try doing the online quiz. I am so thankful to Gleim for providing this kit to me and am excited to take you all along on my journey!
