FAA Training Requirements

What is RVSM?

Reduced Vertical Separation Minimums (RVSM) is an international program that reduces altitude separation from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet between flight levels 290 and 410. This program effectively doubles the amount of traffic that can be supported in a given column of airspace while also offering fuel and time savings.

What is Required to Operate in RVSM Airspace?

Appendix G of 14 CFR Part 91 explains the RVSM program as well as certification requirements. Additionally, FAA Notice 8700.36 explains the RVSM approval process in great detail. To operate in RVSM airspace, the aircraft must be properly equipped and the pilot(s) must have knowledge of RVSM requirements, policies, and procedures. Aircraft requirements and pilot training requirements are spelled out in the FAA references listed above.

What FAA pilot training requirements exist for RVSM operations?

Before flying in RVSM airspace, a pilot must demonstrate acceptable RVSM operating knowledge to an FAA inspector. Specifically, pilots must demonstrate adequate knowledge of RVSM requirements, policies, and procedures. The certificate you receive upon completion of this course is one method of meeting that requirement. Additionally, pilots operating under Part 91K, Part 121, and Part 135 are required to complete recurrent RVSM training every 12 calendar months.
